1948: It became clear that the draft could return at any time. It was also clear that non-registrants and non-religious conscientious objectors would need additional support and help.

A coalition of peace groups-the National Service Board for Religious Objectors, the American Friends Service Committee, the Brethren Service Commission, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the War Resisters League, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation-appointed an Organizing Committee to set up a new support group for objectors named the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (CCCO).

1950's: Many of CCCO's publications were started; the first edition of the Handbook for Conscientious Objectors and Conscientious Objectors in the Armed Forces.

1960's: CCCO, with other peace groups, helped stopped some of the worst abuses and expanded the rights of military CO's. After pressure from these groups the Department of Defense allows CO's to be discharged honorably. CCCO assisted a young agnostic objector, Daniel Seeger, with his landmark Supreme Court case that allows recognition of CO's with unorthodox religious views.

1970's: At the height of the Viet Nam War CCCO had five offices around the nation servicing a growing network of local draft and military counselors. CCCO provided literature and training for these counselors. In the late 60's and early 70's CCCO and the American Civil Liberties Union successfully fought for the right of objectors to challange the military and seek habeas corpus relief (discharge) in federal court.

1990's: CCCO establishes and operates its Third World Outreach program and Military Out of Schools (MOOS) program. CCCO co-founds the GI RIGHTS HOTLINE with other national and international peace groups.

In early 2009 CCCO establishes its new groundbreaking program, COVER ME; assisting citizens and military personnel in need of help.
